May 18: A Celebration of Survival, Sacrifice, and Nationhood

The atmosphere feels different from every other month of the year. The streets, markets, schools, homes, businesses, and even the hearts of the people are filled with an emotion too deep to be described in a few words. May is not simply a month marked by history; it is a month in which people relive their nationhood, their memories, and their unity. May 18 is not an ordinary date on the calendar. It is the day Somaliland reclaimed the independence it had first received from British colonial rule on June 26, 1960. It is a day marked by resilience, sacrifice, and national rebirth. As the month of May begins, Somaliland transforms into a land of celebration and joy. These are days when elders, women, youth, children, national leaders, and members of the armed forces all come together in harmony. It is a season of social unity and togetherness. People greet one another with beautiful words, exchanging prayers and wishes for peace, prosperity, and wellbeing. Every citizen of Somaliland feels connected to this national story. The Somaliland flag becomes the most visible symbol of the celebrations. People wear it proudly, decorate their vehicles with it, and display it across their homes and businesses. Cities and towns become covered in the green, white, and red colors of the Somaliland flag. Inside schools, children line up in celebration. Their faces reflect pride and excitement for their country. Young people become the heartbeat of the celebrations. Groups of youth move together through the streets carrying flags while patriotic songs echo from their vehicles. Businesses and marketplaces also play a major role in the celebrations. Shops, hotels, and commercial centers decorate their buildings with the Somaliland flag. Yet May 18 is not celebrated only within Somaliland. The day is commemorated across all five continents. Wherever Somalilanders live, the flag of the republic is raised with pride. For the people of Somaliland, this day carries deep emotion and historical significance because that freedom was not regained easily. It came after a long and painful war that claimed countless lives and devastated entire communities. Yet from that destruction, the people of Somaliland chose peace. They chose dialogue over revenge, reconciliation over division, and rebuilding over collapse. May 18 is therefore more than a celebration of flags and songs. It is a national memory. It is a day to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the existence of Somaliland. Happy 18th May, Long Live the Republic of Somaliland. Author: Khadan Siyaad
